The best plant care app for what you actually need

A care app reminds you when to water; an identification app tells you what the plant is. Here is which care app fits which need, what each charges, and where our own app falls short.

In short

The best plant care app is the one that reminds you to water: Planta and Plant Parent both send care reminders and have a light meter, but sell paid Premium plans (US App Store, 2026-10-21). PictureThis and PlantIn add reminders to identification, also paid. For free reminders, a repeating iPhone Reminder works. Plant Identifier writes AI care notes but sends no reminders.

  • Disclosure: we make Plant Identifier, one of the apps on this page. Rival facts come from their own US App Store listings, read 2026-10-21; we did not use them for this page.
  • Reminders, a care schedule and a light meter are what make a care app. Planta, Plant Parent, PictureThis and PlantIn list them; all four sell subscriptions.
  • Plant Identifier has a Care Guide, a Light tool and a Water Calculator estimate, but no reminders, no watering schedule and no light meter.

People who search for the best plant care app usually want one thing: to be told when the monstera needs water. That is what separates a care app from an identification app, which tells you what the plant is. This page compares four apps that do care, using only what their own US App Store listings say, with prices read on 2026-10-21. We make Plant Identifier, an identification app with AI care notes. It has no reminders, and this page says so as plainly as it states the others' gaps.

Someone else waters while you're away Planta (shared care) Premium
Reminders without paying anything iPhone Reminders, set to repeat Built into iOS

The sections below explain each line and where each choice falls short.

Where the other app is the better pick

Care apps do the job Plant Identifier doesn't: they remind you. Planta's US listing says its care reminders "adapt to your home environment, local weather, and plant type", and it adds a built-in light meter, a plant journal, shared care while you're away and an Editors' Choice badge (114,278 US ratings at 4.75, 2026-10-21). Plant Parent notifies you when to water, fertilize, prune, propagate and repot, and has a Light Meter. PictureThis and PlantIn pair identification with care reminders; PlantIn adds an Apple Watch app. All four run on Android too. Plant Identifier sends no reminders and measures no light.

What the care apps say they do

Everything here comes from each app's US listing, read on 2026-10-21. We have not tested how well any of them works.

  • Planta (listed as Planta: Plant & Garden Care) is the most complete care app of the four. Its US listing says care reminders "adapt to your home environment, local weather, and plant type", lets you set custom tasks, and describes a built-in light meter, a plant journal to log care and growth, Dr. Planta diagnosis with step-by-step treatment, and shared care with family or friends while you're away. It requires iOS 18.0 or later, the highest minimum of the four.
  • Plant Parent (listed as Plant Parent: Plant Care Guide) is a care-first app from Glority, the seller of PictureThis. Its US listing says you "get notified when it's time to water, fertilize, prune, propagate, repot, and more", has a Light Meter, and lists "One-on-one free consultation with gardening experts" among Premium features.
  • PictureThis (listed as PictureThis - Plant Identifier) is an identification app first, with care reminders, a light meter, disease diagnosis and expert chat added. It has the largest rating count of any plant app we measured.
  • PlantIn (listed as PlantIn: Plant Identifier・Care) combines identification, diagnosis, care plans and reminders, "Ask the Botanist" and an Apple Watch app.

What is free and what costs money (2026-10-21)

All four are free to download with in-app purchases. Apple's rows don't say which period a price covers unless the row's name does, so we print them as shown on the US listings:

App In-App Purchases rows (US)
Planta 1 month Premium Plant Care: $7.99; 3 months: $17.99; 12 months rows from $35.99 to $45.99
Plant Parent Premium rows from $3.99 to $29.99; Family Premium: $49.99; Lifetime: $59.99
PictureThis PictureThis Pro: $3.99, $7.99, $39.99; Family Plan: $49.99
PlantIn Weekly rows $6.99 to $17.99; yearly $29.99 and $39.99; Lifetime Premium Plant Care: $49.99
Plant Identifier No In-App Purchases row; the current version shows no paywall

The listings don't say exactly which features stay in the free part. Plant Parent lists care reminders among its Premium features. Before you start a trial, add one plant and see whether the app lets you set a reminder without paying. If you start one, Apple's cancellation steps apply to every App Store subscription: Settings, your name, Subscriptions, then Cancel Subscription, at least 24 hours before the trial ends.

The free route: a repeating iPhone reminder

If you only want to be reminded, the Reminders app on your iPhone already does it. Apple's guide to adding details in Reminders says to turn on Date or Time, tap Repeat and choose the frequency. Make one reminder per plant ("Water the pothos"), set it to repeat, and adjust it when the season changes. You give up what care apps add on top: weather-aware schedules, a light meter, a journal and shared care.

Plant Identifier, and where it is not the pick

Plant Identifier (listed as AI Plant Identifier Flower App) is our app. It is free to download; the current App Store version, 1.0.6, shows no paywall or usage counter. The developer may add paid features later, so we don't promise it stays free. It needs no account. One photo gives the common and scientific name, and three of its six tools cover care:

  • Care Guide: watering, sunlight, pruning and season-by-season tips, written by an AI for the plant in your photo.
  • Light: light intensity, hours and placement advice, with signs of too much or too little light. It describes what the species needs; it doesn't measure the light in your room.
  • Water Calculator: an AI estimate of how often and how much to water, with signs of over- and under-watering. You enter no pot size or soil, and it creates no schedule.

It also has Diagnose, with a severity badge the AI writes, and a chat under every result. If a plant is struggling, our guides to yellow leaves and plant disease identification cover what to check first.

Where it is not the pick:

  • You want to be reminded. It sends no reminders or notifications and keeps no watering schedule. Use a care app or a repeating iPhone reminder.
  • You want to measure light at a window. Planta and Plant Parent list a light meter; Plant Identifier only describes a species' light needs.
  • Someone else waters while you're away. Planta shares care; Plant Identifier has no account and no sync between devices.
  • You want a person to answer. Plant Parent and PlantIn name human experts; Plant Identifier answers with an AI only.
  • No signal or Android. It needs the internet, because the photo goes to a cloud AI model, and it is iPhone only.

A 10-minute test before you commit

  1. Pick one plant you know well and one you struggle with.
  2. In the care app you're considering, add both and try to set a watering reminder before any price screen appears. Note whether it lets you.
  3. Compare its watering advice for the plant you know with what has actually worked for you.
  4. If you started a trial, open Settings, your name, Subscriptions and note the end date now.

An app whose advice matches your own experience on the plant you know, and that reminds you without a trial, is the one to keep. If you mainly need to know what a plant is, see the best plant identification apps or the free plant identification apps; if you're leaving PictureThis, see PictureThis alternatives.

How we compared

We read each app's US App Store listing on 2026-10-21: price line, In-App Purchases rows and description. We didn't install the paid apps, start trials or test their reminders, light meters or diagnoses. What a listing doesn't describe, we don't claim. Rating counts that day, US storefront: PictureThis 1,120,486, PlantIn 230,117, Planta 114,278, Plant Parent 92,467. They say how widely an app is used, not how well it looks after your plant. Prices change and vary by country: check the listing on the day you decide. For Plant Identifier, only what the code of the current version does counts.

Questions people ask

What is the best plant care app?

For reminders that adjust to your home and weather, Planta, whose US listing has an Editors' Choice badge. For reminders plus expert consultation in Premium, Plant Parent. If you also want identification in the same app, PictureThis or PlantIn. All four sell subscriptions; check what the free part covers before starting a trial.

Is there a plant care app that is actually free?

Among the care apps we read on the US App Store (2026-10-21), all four sell Premium plans. The free route is the iPhone's own Reminders app: one reminder per plant, set to repeat. Identification apps such as Plant Identifier, free to download today, give care notes but no reminders.

Does Plant Identifier remind me to water my plants?

No. It sends no reminders or notifications and keeps no watering schedule. Its Water Calculator is an AI-written estimate of how often and how much to water, with signs of over- and under-watering. Put that rhythm in a reminder yourself, or use a care app.

How do I cancel a plant care app trial?

On iPhone, open Settings, tap your name, then Subscriptions, pick the app and tap Cancel Subscription. Apple says to cancel at least 24 hours before a trial ends if you don't want it to renew. Deleting the app cancels nothing.
